Hey all, Z  here with October’s Nerd Block Subscription box review and I have to say it was totally worth it. Not only were there great items but this month’s box was personally created by the one and only Kevin Smith!!

Now if your living in a cave, under a rock, or just not hipster enough to know who I am talking about Mr. Smith is a Movie writer/actor/director as well as a voice over actor and comic book writer. He will also be in the Newest Lego Batman video game playing the voice of..who else..Kevin Smith.

As big of a fan of both Marvel and DC comics (and having worked for both) this month’s box theme was COLLIDE: Marvel vs. DC and a good assortment was representing both companies as well as a couple Kevin Smith specific items.

First up was the shirt this month featuring Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes Characters Jay and Silent Bob dressed as the Dynamic Duo-ish lol Very nice shirt that surprised me as I’d never seen this one before anywhere really.

Next is a true Marvel V. DC item, POW! Brand Buttons featuring Spider-Man and Wolverine against Batman and Superman, which I find hilarious given the pending Bats vs Supes movie looming and the fact that Spidey kinda replaced the recently deceased Wolvie in the comics.

Next up was the promised OfficialAvengers Movie prop replica and I sort’ve had guessed it would be this or something else small like a shield pin but it’s the Captain America Trading cards that Marvel’s Agent’s of Shield Coulson had in the movie and subsequently “died” spilling blood on them. They came with a certificate of Authenticity card in the back of the deck as well.

For the DC side is this Arkham Asylum Patients Notes notebook, inside are even post-its and colored post-it tabs for marking certain notes by color code, pretty cool being a huge fan of the Arkham video game series.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Back over to Marvel is my 2nd ever POP! Marvel figure, Maskless Deadpool this time, so he can now sit next to my Groot figure and have very…odd…conversations together…very odd.

Another Kevin Smith themed item is these various stickers featuring such things as Lego Jay and Silent Bob, Super Jay and Silent Bob Bros., and of course some references to Smith’s newest movie Tusk with Walrus imagery.

Finally this month while not with the theme but still..it’s ZELDA related is a Mascot Dangler charm. I got the princess one but still, anything Zelda is alright in this Nerd/Geek’s view.

Overall one of the best boxes I’ve gotten since trying these sub boxes, let’s hoping it keeps up in the future!

Lightning Strikes Twice! A Review of Thor: The Dark World

Image

Hey all, time for another spoiler free and total honest movie review. This time around we’ll be looking at the Newest film from the Marvel camp, Thor: The Dark World. As many know sequels rarely live up to the original, in some cases they can be equal if continuing a story non-stop but often always have that something that keeps it from being as well done as the first in the franchise. Settling in to watch the Thor sequel I had this in mind and kept an open view of it.

     In this movie it basically picks up shortly after “The Avengers” movie with Thor making sure his trickster of a brother Loki is securely locked away on Asgard. The main plot of the story basically is some energy long thought buried by Asgardians long ago from a race of dark elves has resurfaced and entangles Natalie  Portman’s character Jane and Asgard once again. As is expected it’s up to Thor to save not only Asgard but Earth in true Thunder God fashion;

I’m not going to right off the bat say it was as good as the original, It’s a very well rounded movie,I think the writing is just as well if not more thought out this time and of course the visuals just work. I did find sometimes in the film scenes with Loki to be a tad slow, uncomfortable, or misplaced. I am aware of the strange Loki fan base out there, whether this is truly for the character or the actor I have no idea. As a long time Marvel Universe fan this surprises me because even though the  character has under gone man versions he’s always been a random and slight antagonist if any, making such a focus on him frankly shocks me. That is my opinion though of course.

While I may find the Loki aspect a bit detrimental in the main sense of the film he works. Both his, Thor, and Jane fit well and play off each other seamlessly when the heat gets high. One other thing I have to say is Kat Denning’s Intern character cracks me up, she’s extremely funny and while Loki try’s to do almost dark/strange jokes Kat is pure stand up comedian and balances well for a small role.

Back to “Is it better?” I’d say the story is better, with less need of set up of characters there’s more room for action and if any of the Marvel movies needs mostly action it’s Thor I’d say. I think this time around the actors seem more comfortable in the roles and it translates on screen. The core story is interesting and has some emotion in it and wraps up very nicely. As I said for negatives, some dry spots with Loki/Thor, the Dark Elves were interesting but a slight bit bland, lack of variety in personality other then “I want to rule the universe.” made the action increase needed and warranted.

I recommend this to any Marvel-Thor-Superhero fan. Yes maybe some go for Thor shirtless or Loki or whatever may be but it’s a well rounded movie over all. I give this out of a possible 10 Mjolnir up, a solid 8. It could have had more especially being a sequel save those couple annoyances. One last tip with all of these Marvel movie crossovers, stay for the credits. Sometimes 1 or even 2 scenes set up future events and this one delivered on it very well for long time fans.

Always have fun in whatever you watch and until next time folks Make mine Marvel! (I could’ve said Excelsior…but felt that might be pushing it)
